£500,000 fine - or offsite data backup? New rules came into effect on 6 April 2010 and the Information Commissioner's Office can now fine companies up to £500,000 if there is a serious breach of data security, whether it is deliberate or negligent and the company didn't take reasonable steps to prevent it. This applies to personal data of customers or staff.
